Aldeburgh
Aldeburgh is a pretty coastal town on the river Alde and enjoys breathtaking views both seawards and following the river Alde inland towards Orford and Snape. Its name comes from ‘Alde Burgh’ meaning “old fort” and the town’s history is closely linked to the changes time and Mother Nature have wrought to the coastal map.

Aldeburgh was once an important Tudor port and its shipbuilders were responsible for Francis Drake’s ‘Golden Hind’. But over time the River Alde silted up taking its toll on the town’s fortunes, and coastal erosion swept away the heart of its old town. Some historic buildings have survived the centuries, such as 400-year old Moot Hall.

Aldeburgh had to wait until the 19th Century fashion for beaches and craze for sea air brought back visitors in quantity, establishing it as a popular seaside resort.

Thorpeness
The small village of Thorpeness is dominated by the Mere, which is popular all year round and bears witness to the village’s fantastical past. In 1910 Stuart Ogilvie bought the hamlet and set to transform it into a private fantasy holiday village. Today the village is just how Ogilvie envisaged it with pretty mock Tudor houses and the fairy-tale ‘House in the Clouds’

The Meare is an artificially created boating lake with landings marked with names on a Peter Pan theme. Tiny islands contain locations found in J M Barrie’s novel including ‘The Pirate’s Lair’ and ‘Wendy’s Island’. The lake is open for row boat hire from Spring through to the end of Summer

Hazelwood Marshes
At the bottom of the garden is the north shore of the River Alde. The surrounding area forms Hazelwood Marshes. Although the lagoon is tidal, we ask guests to respect the bird life in the internationally recognised area of conservation.

Before it flooded there was evidence of Bronze Age settlements on the higher ground. Now it is home to many migrating and resident birds including the iconic avocet.

A 10 minute walk takes you to the bird hide. A tranquil place with lots of information to enjoy the reserve.

You’ll regularly see spoonbill and avocets on the Marsh or a sparrow hawk in the garden!

WE ARE HERE

Directions to the cottage are as follows:

The address of the cottage is

48 Hazelwood Street
Friston

Follow the A1094 from Snape towards Aldeburgh. Look for the "Aldeburgh" sign and a layby on your right, slow down and start indicating right, 100 yds after that, just before you go up the hill, is a car park on your right (if you get to the Golf Club you have gone too far). Pull into the car park and drive out the back of the car park along a sandy lane. Pass White Cottage and Marsh View is the next house you can see it is painted yellow with a black garage. There is plenty of parking.

The Cottage

marsh view aldeburgh suffolk holiday cottage
Marsh View was completely refurbished in spring 2019 to a high standard whilst trying to respect the architecture and feel of the old building.  From exposed timbers, wood-burning stoves and Victorian beds to WiFi throughout and sky TV.
The cottage is ideal for 4 with two double beds* but the Laura Ashley sofa bed also converts to a comfortable double to accommodate extra guests. There are toilets upstairs and down, a lounge, conservatory, dining room and kitchen with breakfast table.

Dishwasher, washing machine, radios and a travel cot are also provided as well as dog towels!

The garden was redesigned for 2019 and provides exceptional views south across Hazelwood Marshes and the Alde Estuary. 2020 will see the front garden and parking area improved to provide further outside space in which to relax.

* 1 bed is 4' wide with access from one side, but this view from the window makes up for it!

Need to Know

There is free wi fi throughout the whole property with a booster socket in the dining room to ensure full coverage.

The code and and login details are on the box in the lounge.

USB charge points are available in the lounge, kitchen, dining room and main bedroom for you to charge your gadgets. You’ll need your own cable.

Television reception is via the Sky Q Box. Everything can be controlled by the sky controls:

  1. Turn on the TV with a 2 second press of the power button
  2. Turn on the Sky box with a single press of the power button. The light will change from yellow to green.

If you are visiting in cooler months the woodburner should be “laid” for you. Just put a match to the fire lighter.

Initially a woodburner needs lots of air to burn brightly. Leave the door a-jar to allow a draw of air. The slider at the top should be set to open. As the fire get going close the door.  If it starts to smoulder, let more air in But opening the daw a little.

The heating elsewhere here is economy 7. We try to    keep ahead of the weather forecast and set the heaters accordingly.

Our water is pumped up from our own well. It has been for 100 years.  It is filtered and the drinking water goes through an osmosis filter making it extra clean.

The filtered drinking water is through the small lever on the left of the kitchen tap.

The right hand lever pushes away for hot and towards you for cold.

After running water, you may hear the pump run on for a little while. This is the osmosis filter repressurizing and nothing to be concerned about; its just preparing more fresh water for you to drink, with no additives.

Sorry to touch on the subject of unmentionables!

Like the well, the house is on a private sewage system. It is an environmentally freindly option that has been used for many years across the globe. There is nothing to concefrn you but you should only put toilet paper down the toilet. Other items do not biodegrade and if bulky will block the system.

The upstairs toilet is more sensitive as it uses a maserator to chop the paper up before going along a smaller pipe. We recommend flushing a little and often! In the past guests have tried to put too much down the toilet causing the pipe to block and water to flood into the stairwell. Their holiday has been interupted while a plumber comes to resolve their problem. The way to avoid this problem is to not overload the system with too much paper or other inappropriate items (condoms and sanitary towels).

The Golden Key, Snape

Owned by the same brothers that own the Plough and Sail at Snape Maltings. Our favorite in Snape.

The Plough and Sail, Snape

At the site of Snape Maltings. A large resturant, snug dining rooms and a cosy snug by the fire.

The Kitchen, Thorpness

The Kitchen prides itself on using local produce. A nice destination cafe with good food.

The Crown, Snape

A farm to fork pub where produce is grown in the garden. In 2015 when the Marshes flooded so did this pub. There are interesting photos inside.

The Brudenell, Aldeburgh

A lovely hotel on the seafront with modern cuisine

The Golden Galleon, Aldebugh

There are two chip shops in Aldeburgh, both are great. Do as Ed Sherran does get chips from the shop and sit on the beach or if it’s a bit chilly, eat upstairs at the Golden Galleon.

The Light House, Aldeburgh

Ideal for pre cinema dinner, followed by an ice cream at the cinema. This is a popular, locally owned restaurant. Booking recommended.

The Wentworth, Aldeburgh

The Wentworth family once owned these cottages. The hotel is a traditional English hotel. Great afternoon tea.

The Wentworth estate is in North Yorkshire but they own much of the land between here and Snape.

Sea Spice, Aldeburgh

Sea Spice is a high end Indian Food restaurant at the White Lion. A superb night out, lovely setting and tremendous food.

The Dolphin, Thorpness

Large pub in Thorpness. Sister pub of The Parot In Aldringham.

Afternoon tea for £12.50!

This is a great place to spend an afternoon relaxing with afternoon tea at an excellent price. Just on the outskirts of Southwold.

Things to do

Shopping, music, culture and more

Snape Maltings is a great destination in any weather. You can while away an afternoon or more here browsing and shopping or attending one of the many events including the annual food fair or World famous Snape Proms.

Best of all, the walk from the cottage to Snape is described as one of the best in Suffolk. Turn left our of the drive and walk for 3 miles.

Aldeburgh Cinema

Aldeburgh is one of the oldest continually running cinemas in the UK. It’s run as a charity and although the film selection is not as vast as the multiplexes its like going back in time to the golden age of cinema.

Thorpness meare

The Meare is a boating lake like no other. The lake with its islands and surrounds covers some sixty acres and has over forty acres of water. However, nowhere is the lake more than three feet deep and so it provides a very safe boating environment for children of all ages. The islands were named by J.M Barrie, the creator of Peter Pan and each have their own attraction from the Fort to the Dragon's lair the explore.

Britten Pears Foundation

Perhaps Benjamin Britten was the most famous resident of Aldeburgh and Snape and the foundation now occupies the house Britten and Pears shared.

Red House is a short walk across the golf course.

Unfortunately, sometimes the weather doesn't always play ball and you need to find something to do out of the rain. Why not try:

 - Snape Maltings - a mix of shops, exhibitions and restaurants

 - Aldeburgh Cinema - a 100 year old cinema full of character, showing new releases and family favorites.

 - The Red House - home of Benjamin Brittain

 - Sizewell B Visitor Centre - ever wondered how nuclear energy is made?

 - Sutton Hoo - the subject of the recent blockbuster The Dig and site of one of the most important Viking burials in the UK.

 - Suffolk Escape Room - nearby at Leiston. Can you escape from a locked room solving clues? lasts about an hour.

 - Potton Hall Spa - when it's wet outside treat yourself to half-day retreat.

If you fancy a walk around the shops, in the hope that it will dry up later, why not visit Woodbridge, Southwold or Beccles.

The Tourist Trail

We cant include everything but The Tourist Trail web site is a useful resourse with lots more information.

Walking

The Sailors Path is accessible directly  from the cottage. It runs from Aldeburgh to Snape and has been described as the best walk in SuffolK.

Walk to Snape, get a coffee, cake or lunch, do some shopping and walk back!

Essential Suffolk publishes a series of walks from Suffolk pubs. All are dog friendly and many local to us.

You can walk across the golf course past Britton’s Red House to Thorpness.

The following link gives details of good walks around Thorpness.

Combining a walk with a trip on a foot ferry makes a walk an adventure. We are lucky to have several ferries on the local rivers. Walberswick to Southwold is a facvorite of ours.

This leaflet helps you plan such an adventure.
